Skin health & internal wellbeing

Acne, eczema, and the internal picture: a Chinese herbal medicine approach in Cannington

By Dr Jude (TCM), Chinese Medicine Acupuncturist at Essential TCM Wellness · AHPRA registered CMR0002920283 AACMA 4490

If you've tried topical creams, changed your skincare routine more times than you can count, and still feel like nobody's looked at the bigger picture behind your skin, I understand the frustration. As a Chinese herbal medicine practitioner in Cannington, my approach starts from a different question: not just "what's on your skin," but "what's happening inside that might be showing up on your skin."

Why skin conditions are rarely just skin-deep

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, skin conditions like acne and eczema are traditionally viewed as reflections of broader internal patterns, things like digestion, stress, sleep, and overall internal balance. This doesn't mean topical care doesn't matter. It means a herbal medicine consultation looks at your whole presentation, not just the breakout or flare-up itself.

This is general traditional theory, and individual results vary. Chinese herbal medicine is not a guaranteed cure for acne or eczema, and I always encourage patients to continue working with their GP or dermatologist for ongoing skin condition management, particularly for more severe or persistent presentations.

What a herbal medicine consultation looks like

Your first visit is a thorough conversation. I'll ask about your skin history, your digestion, sleep, stress, diet, and cycle if relevant. I may also look at your tongue and ask about your pulse, both traditional diagnostic tools in Chinese medicine. From there, I'll discuss an individualised approach, which may include herbal formulas, dietary suggestions, and lifestyle considerations.

Herbal medicine in this context is not a quick fix. It's a considered, ongoing approach, and I'll always be upfront with you about realistic timeframes and what we're aiming to support, rather than promising a specific result.

Conditions I commonly see

  • Acne, including adult and hormonal-pattern presentations
  • Eczema and other inflammatory skin conditions
  • General digestive health and internal balance
  • Stress-related internal patterns that may present through the skin

Beyond skin: the rest of Dr Jude's practice

While skin and internal health are a particular focus, Dr Jude's scope as a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner extends further. He also offers cosmetic acupuncture, pain management, and scalp health treatments, brings a special interest in nutrition as part of whole-person care, and leads our Qi Gong group exercise sessions at the clinic, a gentle, breath-led movement practice suited to general wellbeing and stress support.

If you're dealing with persistent tension, looking for a nutrition-informed approach alongside herbal medicine, or curious about joining a Qi Gong session, these are all worth asking about at your first visit, even if skin health isn't your main concern.

A note on being newly registered, and why that's a good thing

I recently graduated as a Traditional Chinese Medicine herbalist, and I'm genuinely proud of the thorough training and clinical hours this required. Being early in my career means I bring current study, time to give each patient real attention, and a strong, recent grounding in both traditional theory and modern clinical practice. I take the responsibility of your care seriously, and I work under the same AHPRA registration standards as every other registered practitioner in this clinic.

Frequently asked questions

Can Chinese herbal medicine cure my acne or eczema?
No therapy can guarantee a cure for any skin condition. Chinese herbal medicine may support your body's internal balance as part of a broader approach to skin health, alongside, not instead of, any treatment from your GP or dermatologist.

Are the herbs safe to take with my current medication?
I'll always ask about current medications and medical conditions during your consultation, and will discuss any relevant considerations with you directly. Please bring a list of what you're currently taking to your first appointment.

How long before I might notice a change?
This varies significantly between individuals. We'll discuss a realistic, individualised timeframe at your consultation rather than a generic promise.
